Crossroads Church of the Nazarene

A Life Discovery Church

Hi Gang,

As I am reflecting on our class this past Sunday I was blessed to have all of you present. There were 62 students in class. Our class size hinders discussion however; if you can get beyond that reality I think you would agree that David Platt’s book offers us a fresh challenge to examine ourselves in light of the claims of the Gospel. The upcoming weeks will not be any easier in content but I believe if we continue to approach class with an open heart to God – He will gently lead us into all truth.

Remember this is an individual journey. Your radical faith expression will not and should not look exactly like my faith journey. Your questions are valid and purposeful in your own personal hike through this study.

Some are asking, “Does God want me to sell all I have to give to the poor?”  My immediate comment is that if we all sold everything we have and gave it to the poor someone would need to provide for our needs because we would be poor and hungry. So I think there is a godly balance to be found here.  David Platt is not living in a homeless shelter although he has ministered in several. That said I do think we need to be more acutely aware of those less fortunate and provide for their needs to our best ability as Christ would want us to do.

Are you ready? Here is this week’s assignment:

  1. Read chapter 2 – Too Hungry for Words in Radical.
  2. Read these Bible passages –
  1. Pray for God to lead you and for his leadership in our class time.

Please – I am imploring you – I have started a Forum on our church website. Join up and post a comment from your perspective.

See you Sunday,

Randy

You know Randy, the thought of "all paths lead to God" from a pure logical standpoint is completely true.  It's just the slight problem that all the paths, save one, will get You there long enough to be judged!   Dean Frey taught me something last year that has revolutionized the way I look at life.  2/3 of all people think Emotionally, not logicly.  So how can people look in a casket and say He/She was so "Good" and what they are insinuating by that statement is that they are surely in Heaven!  Here is where I believe American Christianity has departed without understanding.  Here is another revolutionary thought. A crooked line does not no it is crooked until it compares itself to a straight line.  The Emotional Creatures that we are, we view ourselves as "good" fruit (Straight line) because we compare ourselves to others we feel are also "Good." Here in lies the fall.  If we have only ever tasted bad fruit, and looked at bad fruit, associated with bad fruit, it all looks good (Straight). We no nothing different.  (Emotionally)  and by default we are a straight line in our own eyes, because short of opening up the Word of God and comparing our line (which will always have some form of crookedness) to the only straight line that exists, we have indeed become our own god deceiving ourselves and others into a false sense of a Heavenly security.  Ultimately, when the incling of bad fruit is pointed out many try to lop off a branch when the real issue is at the roots.  Thanks, Jared
You bring up several very valid points Jared. Thanks for your point of view. r
